Why shrug?
- De-fund the beast. If you can stop paying income taxes by dropping your income to lower middle class levels or lower, your taxes will go to zero and reduce the income the Feds take in. Money runs the beast, at some point the Chinese will stop buying our debt and we will end up with hyper-inflation. Obama will be seen in the same light as Robert Mugabe who destroyed Zimbabwe.
- Your contribution to society is not just about taxes. Most people spend nearly everything they make, that money props up the economy, like air filling a balloon. The rich don't just sit on their money, they invest it, which pays salaries, or they spend it, which pays salaries. When a rich man buys a yacht someone has to build it, these are artisans who earn the money they make through skill and labor. How can that be a bad thing? Don't let the Democrats demonize you for being rich, stop being rich. I gave up a six figure salary when I shrugged, it's nice to downsize and stop spending, and it hastens the bloody end to this mess by pulling money out of the economy.
- Neither is your contribution to society just your paycheck. You are worth more than you are paid, remember, your boss doesn't employ you just to keep you busy, he makes a profit from your work. If your work wasn't more valuable than the sum of your pay, your benefits and your taxes (don't forget SSN that he has to pay) he wouldn't have you around.
- And finally there are intangibles that you contribute, like inventions, ideas, processes, methods, knowledge and friendship. As a valuable worker you create wealth in many ways, one way is being a part of a team that gets along with each other and makes work a good and fun place to be. Without you the remaining people get demoralized, as more and more people shrug, the workplace becomes more like a morgue, boring, static and featureless. If even the most enthusiastic Obama supporters realize that life was better BO (Before Obama) than after, they will get the hint, they will understand that flowery talk doesn't make the flowers grow. As much as it might hurt you to do this to your coworkers, it's better to get it over with, we can work together again, but not with this clown in charge.
Reread the book, in Atlas Shrugged those who shrugged took on low paying jobs, and made a point to not work in their chosen fields. If you need to work do so, but avoid your field and for Gods sake avoid teaching! You don't want to train people to replace you, you want the leftists to suffer until you can work in your field under YOUR terms, no oppressive taxes, no demonizing of honest work, no matter how high the pay, and no idiotic regulations for imaginary catastrophes like Global Warming or whatever name the Truth Squad decides to call it next week.

How to shrug
- Don't tell your boss you're "shrugging" or even "quitting". Simply tell them you have decided to take a sabbatical or if you're old enough, tell them you are retiring. You don't want to be blacklisted for your political views. Once this is all over, you may want to join the firm again, or another and if they think you're going to abandon them when things don't go your way you'll be rejected. Remember, in Atlas Shrugged every character who shrugged had "retired".
- Look for an opportunity to do good on your way out. In these tough times, there are people who really need their jobs, if you don't need to work, you can save their job by leaving. However, realize, you must do this for YOU, not for someone else, shrugging is a selfish act, not a selfless act. Selfishness is good. Always help yourself first, then if you can achieve good for someone else as a side effect all the better. Remember the reason we are in this situation, the world is drowning in selflessness.
- Exit gracefully, don't make a fuss and don't be bitter. This is an opportunity for you to stand by your principles and you should walk out the door with a smile on your face. You will enjoy your time off (I certainly do), and every month that goes by without your money going into Obama's black hole will give you great joy.
- Be an evangelist. Share your views, post comments on bulletin boards, web pages and blogs. You'll have lots of time on your hands, use it constructively.
- Be courageous. Don't worry, Obama's not going to kill or imprison you, he's got 300 million people to screw with, he won't have energy to pounce on you. Besides, you won't have an income, the IRS can't screw with you.
- What to do about health care? I have checked out of that system too. As a chronically healthy person all my health insurance premiums did was fund sick people who couldn't afford to pay for their maladies. Why should my GOOD genes and habits (don't drink, don't smoke, don't fool around, etc) which allow me to live a healthy life subsidize those who stand to pollute the gene pool with their unhealthy genes? Similarly, a guy who sleeps with every Tom, Dick and Mary is looking to die, I won't help him lead that lifestyle on my dime. I can afford to pay for whatever health care I need. If the bill is too big, living in a state with doctor assisted suicide helps. I refuse to make my fellow citizens pay for me to stay alive. And I refuse to pay to keep them alive, why should I care more than they do about staying alive? This article by Marcel Girodian makes a number of excellent points about forced health care and coerced health insurance.
